Star Lake '12 National Western Blog Report #7 (1/12/12)
Today starts the showing of Herefords at the 2012 National Western Stock Show. The Junior Show will begin at 8 AM with Lydell Meier of Clinton, TN evaluating the 143 heifers entered. That is about 30% more than last year and the entries breakdown with 83 polled heifers and 58 horned heifers being shown by Juniors. After the Junior Show, the National Hereford Bull Show will take to the ring and is scheduled to begin at 12 Noon. Jarold Callahan of Yukon, OK will sort the 149 bulls that exhibitors have entered from across the United States and Canada. The bulls breakdown with 65 horned entries and 84 polled. Days start early in the barns on show days and we wish all exhibitors good luck and have a great Denver. Jon will put results during the show on or Star Lake Facebook page...become a fan and follow along. Have questions ask them there.
There is a live broadcast of this year's Denver shows available through Cattle Inmotion - you need to be registered to view and we believe they are charging a small fee. We will do our best to recap results for you.
Trivia question based on yesterday's snowstorm....What is the most sought liquid relief when a snowstorm blows in during Stock Show week? Answer appears later in the blog.
"The Denver Crud" is the making its rounds around the Stock Show as is tradition. Symptoms can vary widely but usually include some form of cough, congestion and feeling pretty rough. Based on being in and out of temperature extremes, high moisture to dust, long hours, missed meals and lack of sleep its little wonder The Crud spreads. A sure fire treatment method for our crew is Buckley's Mixture Sirop; a Canadian creation that has to be the nastiest tasting stuff I have ever touched! But as the saying goes "It will cure it or kill it".
Daughter Jaci arrived this morning - her husband Jason arrived a couple days earlier and has been seen with clippers in hand on his families Barber Ranch string...that gets the whole family here now. The Gene and Lori Stumpf family arrived yesterday and the Stumpf boys went right to work. A lot of our Junior exhibitors were hard at it yesterday in preparation to today's show.
The weather warm up is supposed to be arriving today in time for the activities in The Yards. If the weather guys deliver the mid-forties and sunshine as promised the slop and mud throughout the Denver metro means bring your boots. Trivia question answer: Most sought after liquid relief is the blue windshield washer fluid under the hood. Never have I been anywhere that road grime is so bad as what exists in Denver.
The Hereford Hospitality area opened on the main floor of the historic Livestock Exchange Building yesterday and is open through Saturday. There are exhibits of breeders (Stop by the Star Lake Booth), Hereford apparel for sale, snacks and beverages. Thanks to many breeder sponsors the area is available for all to enjoy.
The cook tent has officially closed for this season as the last dinner was served yesterday. Two crockpots of Cowboy Beans are ready for Friday and the gear gets packed away.

Only way you can get more live then this is by tuning into the Cattle in Motion coverage by Clicking Here and creating an account!
