Star Lake 2012 National Western Blog #4

Star Lake '12 National Western Blog Report #4 (1/9/12)

We woke this morning to another brisk morning of 23 degrees but the sky is blue and the sun is shining brightly.  The Denver metro is expecting a high in the mid 50's today that should continue into tomorrow.   The forecast is still calling for a 60% chance of snow on Wednesday (1/11) but the sunny skies and warmer temps will return later in the week.

What continues to embrace the Hereford breed is the close knit family of Hereford enthusiasts...as everyone gathers it is just like a family reunion.  That camaraderie will be embraced Tuesday night (10th) as Hereford folks gather in The Yards for the Herdsman Social.  We encourage everyone to attend - it is a fundraiser so give generously for the cause - funds raised support the Herdsman Scholarships.  We are not cooking this year and we hear pizza is on the menu.  As a people event for the Hereford breed you don't want to miss it.

Further on the cattle report...since the Jr and Bull show are up first on the schedule I will continue there.  I went through the Junior heifers yesterday so now a look at a portion of The Hill bulls.   Lock-N-Load is here, he is the current Louisville National Champion and he still looks the part. This Reload son out of 173P is owned with Turkey Feather Ranch and TCF.  Market Index is making a repeat trip to the NWSS.  He is a Can-Am son out of Investor Gal and is owned with Moss Land & Cattle and Tennessee River Music.  Tymeless is a son of the renowned Kessey 321L and About Time 743.  He is a Fall '10 model that is owned in partnership with Harrison Cattle, Kasey Herman and Sunnyside Stock Farm.  Cumberland is another bull calf that is owned with Harrison Cattle as well as Larson's Polled Herefords.  He is the youngster of the group; he was born on 3/13/11 and is a son of the Carla cow and TH About Time 415W.  Tomorrow's Blog will feature a report of the father/son team of Shock & Awe and his son Shock Wave.

I wanted to touch base on our crew...the first group of Josh, Seth, Marshall, Zac and Brian have been here a week now.  They were the set-up crew with Seth, Zac and Brian making their inaugural appearances on Team Star Lake.  Two days later, on the 4th is when I, Todd, Tommy and Bobby arrived.  This is Bobby's first trip to Denver with us also.  The balance of the crew arrived over the next few days with the "old-timers" of Chad, Matt and Dale getting in.  That makes twelve of us on the ground now with Max and Montie in transit today.  Brad is holding down the fort & calving cows at the Ranch.

One of the questions from a Blog follower was "Are the shows going to be broadcast on the Internet?"  Last year I checked with AHA and reported that while the 2011 shows were not going be broadcast an agreement was reached with Superior to broadcast beginning in 2012.  I was misinformed, and after a little checking I believe that Cattle In Motion will be doing the show broadcasts this year.  I understand that preregistration sign-up is required and a fee is involved.  If you are looking to watch this way don't wait till the last minute.

Thank you goes to Crystal Young (my future daughter in law) for helping with photos.  Crystal has a great job as the Product Manager marketing Sure Champ across the country.  Say hi to Crystal in the VitaFerm booth along the main aisle in The Yards.  Yes, that was a paid promotional endorsement...and she approves this message, maybe.

Today's lunch is Beef Stew and tonight we are dining on Baked Ham, homemade Mac & Cheese, Twice Baked Potatoes, Green Beans, Waldorf Salad, Dinner Rolls and Baked Apples with Ice Cream for dessert.  Some of the guys are getting a little chunky J!

Tonight begins the mad dash for move in on The Hill...In our case we need the Red Angus to move out before we can build new stall beds and get set up.  It will be a long night for many...as the cook I get to go to bed early.

FLASH UPDATE:  One of the three bulls in The Yards that were mentioned as For Sale has been sold....STAR TRF Valentino 170Y ET was SOLD this morning and will be making his new home in Indiana.  As the buyer hasn't told his wife yet we will hold his name to protect the guilty!  She will love him and Valentine's Day is right around the corner!!!

That leaves two For Sale here....contact any member of the Star Lake staff if interested.
